Dan Lethbridge / Nick Milwright / Nick Batterham – Roads @ The Wesley Anne, Dec 24 2010

•December 25, 2010 • Leave a Comment

Exceptional acoustic cover of Portishead’s Roads by these three talented musicians.  Nick Milwright (of Blackchords), Nick Batterham (of Cordrazine and The Earthmen) and Dan Lethbridge each played solo acoustic sets before playing Roads at the very end.

The Church 30th Anniversary Tour @ Thornbury Theatre, 19/12/10

•December 20, 2010 • 1 Comment

I have loved The Church ever since I was six years old and first heard Under the Milky Way. Twenty-two years later and it still affects me utterly profoundly whenever I hear it.  It’s probably still my sentimental favourite, but when I contemplate their entire 30 year career, man, it’s hard to pick just one!

The Church‘s 30th Anniversary tour, ‘An Intimate Space’, ended last night at the Thornbury Theatre; their second show at the venue after the first sold out.  (I didn’t find out they were touring until the second show had already been announced – seriously, I gotta come out from under my rock a bit more!)  The guys chose one song from each of their albums and played them in reverse chronological order.  They toured the show all around America before performing it in Australia, so I think they are looking forward to a well-deserved rest…

One of my other most favourite songs of theirs is Reptile, and this was one of the first songs of the show.  They played a slowed-down, jazz version (“jazzy Reptile”, Steve called it); tremendous.  They also played a flamenco version of Metropolis; loved Marty’s guitar work!  In between songs Steve did a lot of talking, joke-telling, and making fun of other musicians..  He also told some interesting anecdotes, including one about one of the band’s managers –  for all of three months before they fired him whilst sitting in a hot tub in his mansion – who they had discovered was a massive drug importer.

They played three encores, the first song of which was an excellent cover of Smashing Pumpkins Disarm (the Pumpkins covered Reptile when they played V festival in 2008, though I don’t remember them playing it at the Melbourne show – they played it in Sydney though).  Cheers for the extended encore guys… love your work.

The Church next play in Australia on April 10th at Sydney Opera House.  The show is titled ‘A Psychedelic Symphony’ and will feature the George Ellis Orchestra.  This should be quite awesome and I’m seriously thinking about flying over for it, though the only tickets left are towards the back.  I’m not sure it could beat the intimate atmosphere of the Thornbury Theatre though.

I woke up this morning with Almost With You in my head.

What a great show!

Back in da hood

Just to let you all know, I am back on the NORTHSIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIDE!

North Carlton to be specific.

It ain’t Fitzroy, but it’s nice and quiet!

I moved from Port Melbourne two weeks ago.  Port Melbourne is lovely, and I was really looking forward to living so close to the beach during the summer.  So I moved… on the fourth day of summer.

Yeah.

Big thumbs up once again to Little Red Trucks for the usage of a little red truck  and Ianto’s time and effort.

Here is a picture of me enjoying a delicious Mountain Goat Steam Ale at the lovely Kent Hotel, taken by one of my new housemates, Tristan. Tristan is a blonde musician who likes coffee, cafes, hanging out in cafes drinking coffee, hanging out in my pub, hanging out on the median strip drinking beer, iPhones, and probably other stuff also.

OM NOM NOM

The Kent Hotel do an amazing salad with grilled chicken, pumpkin, spinach, red onion, feta and pinenuts, by the way.  Just so you know.

98 Webb St sale update!

•December 3, 2010 • Leave a Comment

You, my devoted readership of three,  may remember that on approximately October 7 I mentioned that 98 Webb St was for sale.

This triumph of architecture is on the corner of Gore and Webb streets, opposite the greatest pub in Fitzroy, the Union Club Hotel. /end blatant plug

(Pics nicked from Kerstin Thompson Architects.)

WELL I can now report that this conveniently-located abode sold for $1.51million on October 23rd.

Totally should have snapped it up…. “Partay at my place y’all!”

But… no.

Blackchords @ Sidney Myer Music Bowl, Oct 29th 2010

•November 12, 2010 • Leave a Comment

My mate Damian’s band Blackchords had the honour of supporting Powderfinger (and also Jet) on their final Melbourne show – EVER – held at Sidney Myer Music Bowl a couple of Fridays ago.  I managed to score a last minute ticket on the Tuesday (thanks, Arts Centre!) – I even got a seat in the stalls, which proved to  be a convenient point from which to film.

I’m not going to write a review on Powderfinger – they were awesome, which I’m sure you could have all predicted, they played for a bit right in front of the lawn for all the lowly lawn-dwellers, and Bernard ever managed to spot an old ex-girlfriend who dumped him in Year 12 in the audience (he gave her a hug at the end of the show).

I am, however, going to post my one video of Blackchord’s performance, the lovely song ‘Broken Bones’.  ‘At World’s End’ is probably my favourite, but I got told off by security for filming before they had played that, and I decided not to risk having my camera confiscated..!  The security lady was nice enough to let me keep filming the rest of the song.

Handheld = a little shaky…

PS. I just came back from an eye examination and one of the rows of letters on the computer screen was “K O D”.  Heehee.

PPS. This is my 50th post.  Whee! \o/  A year old in 4 days time; that averages out at about one post per week… not too shabby…

A bit of history of the Yorkshire Brewery

•November 10, 2010 • Leave a Comment

What’s the grey bit attached to the stables?

(The stable door is the closed arched door seen straight through the open arch – the grey bit I’m referring to is attached on the left side of the stable door and is elevated.)

I wish it was still there now – looks like this picture was taken in 2005; the site has changed significantly since then.

More history relating to the former Yorkshire Brewery and several more images here.

The site notes several important reasons for maintaining this site, including but not limited to:

* as a complex expressive of the first generation of industrial development in the Collingwood area which was noted for its manufacturing activity in the nineteenth century.

* for its architectural detail, including polychrome brick and a mansard roof, the only substantially intact example remaining in Victoria of a feature typically associated with nineteenth century brewing towers

* as an archaeological site which may reveal further evidence of industrial processes, buildings and activities on the site, including the Yorkshire Hotel and other properties owned by John Wood.

Really, more needs to be done to look after this wonderful heritage-listed place.

Also, check out this old photo dating back to 1905-1910, of the Yorkshire Brewery (top left corner) overlooking Victoria Parade.

I would love to be able to travel back in time to see these places as they were then.  I’d do it right after I went back to visit the Aztecs for a bit (no, not the band).

Der Raum’s “Dash of Bitters” degustation

•October 26, 2010 • 2 Comments

Sooooo I was back at Der Raum last night after not having been there for awhile.  The last degustation I attended there was… March..?  I think.  That one was martinis… delicious, delicious… martinis… -dribble-

Anyway.

Last night’s degustation was all about bitters, and I figured since I know just about nothing about bitters except that Angostura makes some, I’d go along.

So now I still don’t know that much about bitters, but I have experienced some tasty, tasty cocktails containing them!

I’m also having a little trouble remembering what was in each of the cocktails, particularly the non-bitters components (observant, I know…) BUT involved was: dehydrated Campari (DELICIOUS on it’s own, eaten with a spoon!) , a foamy version of a lemon-lime-and-bitters in a long test-tube type thing, tasty alcoholic sorbet served in a cup (could totally get away with consuming this one in public places), saffron-infused bourbon disguised as a dessert of pannacotta consistency, and a dry-iced mint-choc palate cleanser to finish consisting of four different types of bitters and eaten whole.  Very cold.  And tasty.  Have I used the word “tasty” enough yet?

Saffron-infused bourbon disguised as dessert, with "fairy floss". That's absinthe in that there syringe. Tasty.

All excellent courses, as per usual.  Surprisingly, I didn’t end up as drunk as I thought I would.  I suspect the giant serving of beer-battered fish-and-chips I had at the Union beforehand helped save me.  Seriously, the size of those fish-and-chips is ridiculous.
