Newish pieces in Croft Alley

•July 12, 2011 • 4 Comments

Croft Alley, one of the most famous of laneways in Melbourne for it’s art.

Made a quick trip down on my lunch break.  Spotted some newish-looking pieces.

Got a few more pics on my SLR, I’ll post them at a later time.

Croft Alley is never disappointing.

The chronicles of the Melbourne University fly

•June 29, 2011 • 3 Comments

This fly stencil has appeared on various University of Melbourne buildings and pathways at least three times now.

I haven’t seen any more but then it’s a big campus and I probably only walk around about a quarter of it on a regular basis.

Anyone seen any others anywhere else – on or off of campus?

Anyone know who did them?

A tribute to Boris, my retired SLR

•June 28, 2011 • 2 Comments

My faithful Pentax DSLR, Boris, retired on the weekend.

Taking his place is an as-yet-unnamed shiny new Canon 7D; bigger and a little faster, and a lot more complex.

Boris has been my trusty companion for the past four years, accompanying me on many an urban exploration mission as we scaled silo tops together and sidestepped dodgy holes in floors. He has travelled to exotic locations such as Tongan caves and Darwin pubs.

He has kept the other, less-used cameras on my camera shelf company as they sat there for weeks on end, wondering when I would be able to afford to put film in them again.

Now he gets to have a well-earned rest, but may come out for the occasional guest appearance.

Now, a photo tribute to Boris.

“L’Inconnue De La Rue” by RONE, opening night

•June 18, 2011 • 3 Comments

Sooo, I wasn’t there at 5:59 as I claimed I would be.  I was at the much-less-glamorous Greensborough train station.  Some dodge-looking people round those parts.

Anyway,  I got to Backwoods Gallery about 6:45 and it wasn’t too packed, mainly because all the free beer had run out by that time.  There was still too many people for me to get a chance to chat to him, so Rone if you ever read this, nice show dude.

Each “billposter” layer was screenprinted by Rone himself, and while I’m sure he’s experienced enough at screenprinting to knock them out at a pretty fast rate, it looks like it would still have taken quite a long time to do.

Rone’s exhibition runs until June 26.

An ex-mansion-cum-retirement home lays abandoned and derelict.

It’s former inhabitants’ lives forgotten.

“WOW” is the only word I can think of to describe this place, and that’s a slight understatement.

That view – need I say more?

(Photos from realestateview.com.au.)

Summer parties on that roofdeck!

Maybe we could all chip in?  Only a cool $1.175m required.

I will make us the best mojitos in summer!

Rone’s first solo show, opening this Friday!

•June 14, 2011 • Leave a Comment

I love Rone’s work!

If you live/work/play in Melbourne’s inner North then you probably will have seen his stencils around.  One of his most prolific was the girl under the bridge on Flinders Street.

Rone‘s stencils are some of the most recognisable of Melbourne’s street art.  He is one of the original members of Everfresh, and one of the founders of Backwoods Gallery in Collingwood.

This Friday sees the opening of his first  solo show – L’inconnue de la rue – at Backwoods.   Yes FIRST, can you believe it?   He cites commitments with the gallery and also with the Everfresh crew as reasons why he hasn’t had a solo show earlier.  It opens on Friday at 6pm; I suggest you get there early.  I’m planning to be there at 5:59, SHARP.

Here is a bit of a teaser to tide you over until the show opens.

More from the abandoned high school

Forgotten photographs

•June 8, 2011 • 2 Comments

Last weekend a couple of friends and I visited an abandoned high school in Melbourne’s north-eastern suburbs.  The school closed down at the end of last year as it merged with another high school to form one big high school.

A lot of stuff was left behind.  Desks and chairs were all gone, but we found a lot of science equipment (mostly broken), kitchen uternsils, and even team shirts with numbers on them.  Graffiti and strings of toilet paper peppered the buildings.  Some blackboards and whiteboards still had parts of class lessons written on them.

One of the most fascinating rooms was the darkroom.  It was strewn with students’ photographs; some of each other in fancy dress at the school, others of unknown people going about their daily activities.  Landscapes, buildings, cars, pets – all bits and pieces of the students’ lives there in black and white on photographic paper that was still in perfect condition.

My favourite was one of a little girl in ballet costume, lying on her stomach on the floor of a ballet studio watching an older girl dance.  I “rescued” this photo; it now sits on my desk alongside my Mac.  I might frame it; I’m not sure yet.

I wonder if any of the students wish they’d gotten their photographs before they left the school, or if they have forgotten about them completely.  I would be interested in returning the ballet photo to the photographer if they ever happen to see this.
