Drewfunk “Parity” opening night @ Paradise Hills

•November 29, 2011 • 1 Comment

Friday night saw the opening of talented Melbourne artist Drewfunk‘s second show, titled Parity, at Paradise Hills in Richmond.

Parity is much different to his first show, Black Linings, with earthy tones, swirly brushstrokes and multi-layered imagery.  His highly-detailed pieces still prominently feature animals (as well as the odd creepy-crawlie) and he uses a variety of different styles including paint splatters, drips and fine spray in addition to the traditional brushwork.

I think Drew’s new work is stunning, and I only wish I could afford to buy some more art right now!  Drew if you read this – my fave is the one with the mozzies… if you didn’t sell it, keep in mind I have a massive milestone birthday coming up in March :p

I can’t recommend this exhibition enough!  Parity runs until December 10 at Paradise Hills (1-9 Doonside St, Richmond), so check it out.

In the meantime, enjoy some of the mad moves that Kings Only busted out during Drew’s show!

Planet Love Sound’s ‘On the Run’ video

•November 22, 2011 • Leave a Comment

One of my favourite Melbourne bands, Planet Love Sound have just released their first music video, for ‘On the Run’

This was filmed at the abandoned Beelitz-Heilstätten sanatorium just outside of Berlin.  Originally built as a tuberculosis sanatorium, the complex was used as a German military hospital during World War I, and then a Soviet military hospital following the defeat of Germany in World War II, until1995.  Following this it was used as a neurological rehabilitation center and as a center for research and care for victims of Parkinsons disease, until it was completely abandoned in 2000.

The video is directed by Josh Dawson; check it out below.

Planet Love Sound should be back in Melbourne soon; December maybe?

Yarra Council objects to Yorkshire redevelopment plans

•November 14, 2011 • 2 Comments

Heritage Victoria asked Yarra Council what they thought of the proposed redevelopment plans for the iconic Yorkshire Brewery in Collingwood, and Yarra Council’s views pretty much reflect the community’s: too big, too high, bad design.

Read the media release.

Yarra Council is still seeking feedback until November 21.  You can send feedback to Yarra Council, P.O. Box 168 Richmond 3121 or emails to planningadmin@yarracity.vic.gov.au.

Visible Ink book launch!

•October 31, 2011 • 1 Comment

Those hardworking folks at RMIT have been putting out the Visible Ink Anthology for 23 years now.  An art/photography/poetry/prose collection, this year’s anthology is titled The Screen Door Snaps.

I have a photograph featured in this edition – and yes, it is of an abandoned place!

The launch is Thursday 10th November from 6:30-9:30pm, with readings starting from 7pm, at the First Site Gallery, Storey Hall Basement, 344 Swanston St (that’s RMIT’s city campus).  There will be drinks and nibblies!

Yorkshire Brewery development plans

•October 25, 2011 • 7 Comments

Yesterday I reported that an application to demolish parts of the former Yorkshire Brewery in Collingwood has been lodged.  You can see all the plans here.

The below picture shows what will be retained and what won’t be.  Seems that the significant brick structures will all be retained, while the silos will  go.

As for the development itself, it will take up much of the land that is currently used as a carpark, with buildings going right up to the brick brew tower (the larger yellow square in the below illustration).

Some development is a good thing, and of course it’s good that they’re incorporating the existing brick structures rather than fighting to demolish them.  But what I really don’t like is the height of the proposed development – 17 stories.

This is how it will look viewed from Robert St (you know, that tiny little alleyway-type street running down the side of the silos, with the Karate school opposite the carpark entrance).

Yep.  That is what 17 stories is going to look like.

Application to demolish Yorkshire Brewery has been lodged

•October 24, 2011 • 3 Comments

The sad day has come.

An application to demolish the heritage-listed former Yorkshire Brewery in Collingwood has been lodged by SMA Projects Australia Pty Ltd.  The silos will be demolished and the brick buildings partially demolished.

The proposal from SMA Projects provides for a mixed use development over several buildings, ranging from 1-17 storeys high, and including a cafe, a deli and numerous apartments.

“Key aspects of the proposal include:

  • A total of 349 dwellings are proposed.
  • About 178 square metres of other uses are proposed, including a food and drink premises, a deli and a business centre.
  • A total of 348 car spaces are proposed. The applicant is seeking a reduction in the standard car parking requirement.
  • Demolition of the silos buildings and part demolition of existing buildings on the site.”

An information session about the application will be held at the Richmond Town Hall (333 Bridge Road) on Thursday 3 November, from 6pm-7pm. Planning Officers and the applicant will be available to discuss the proposal and answer any questions.  I plan to attend to find out the extent of the proposed demolition of the brick buildings.  Obviously they are in such a bad state that some work will need to be done on them before they can be converted into anything, but I am worried about just how much they plan to demolish.

If you would like to object to the proposed development, you need to send a submission to the council stating how this development would affect you, and include your name and address.  You need to quote the application no.  PLN11/0750. Submissions can be mailed to the  Statutory Planning Department, c/o Yarra Council, P.O. Box 168 Richmond 3121 or can be emailed to planningadmin@yarracity.vic.gov.au.  You need to do this by Monday November 21 (though the sign on the site fence suggests that the relevent authority will not decide before November 19..?)

As the site is Heritage Listed, SMA Projects need to obtain a permit from Heritage Victoria.  Heritage Victoria are seeking feedback from the community as well, so let them know how you feel about it, but you need to do it by this Wednesday October 26th!  More information about it can be found on their site.

We need to make sure these beautiful heritage-listed buildings get looked after!
