Abandoned student village

•May 1, 2011 • 14 Comments

Another weekend, another urbexpedition.  I’m beginning to think I just shouldn’t go back to working at the pub on weekends!

The sky was suitably grey and melancholy.  The company was suitably twisted and eager for exploration.

 School’s out forever.

(Having a bit of fun with photoshop here…)

I didn’t find the place particularly depressing when I was there.  The rooms are mostly empty except for a few pieces of destroyed furniture here and there; no personal belongings remain.  But I just looked at some photos of the place when it was still a vibrant student village, showing smiling students hanging out there, and now looking back at my photos I feel a sense of sadness.  These buildings saw people building new friendships, having fun together and creating memories.  I wonder if they feel sad when they see the place now?

And this makes me particularly sad:

I don’t know who Sarah is but I hope she is safe…

I discovered this song today.

I seriously walked around for about two hours listening to it on repeat.

AKIO – Lethal Force

AKIO‘s only been on the music making scene for about six months now.

Fucking sweet track; looking forward to more!

Let’s get hiiiigh

I love heights.  I may have said this before.  Actually, I think I may have stated this on my info page.

Anyhow.    I like exploring places that are right in the middle of the urban sprawl, but are high up enough to take me away from it.

You may have read about how much I love the silos of the Yorkshire Brewery for this reason.  Well, a certain place in the CBD has become my silos of the city.

Such a shweeet place to get away from it all.

Red wooden cross by Neil Thomas

•April 15, 2011 • Leave a Comment

I bought this red wooden cross from Neil Thomas at the Rose Street Artists’ Market a couple of weeks ago just before I left for Perth.

I’d been eyeing it off for a couple of weeks; I’ve been trying to be good and save my money for travelling, but I couldn’t resist it.

Neil is at the Rose Steet Artists’ Market every Saturday and Sunday.  From the look of his stall, he works predominantly with wood.  Check out his website to see some of his creations (he doesn’t update much though), but better yet check out his stall at the markets.  I love the badges and the clocks with the little people in them!

So I can now say I’ve been to Perth…

I got back from Perth late on Wednesday night.  It wasn’t a holiday, as I was over there to say goodbye to someone whom I loved very much.  They had been battling leukemia for a year and, unfortunately, lost that battle early on Sunday morning.

I caught up with many dear friends while I was over there.  It was good that we were finally all together again, which is something I’d been wanting for ages… just unfortunate about the completely crap circumstance.  I met quite a few awesome new people too; friends, family and workmates who were also there to lend a hand and say goodbye.  I also got to catch up with the wonderful Kezza, who not only put me up in her house for a couple of nights, but cooked the most amazing vegie lasagna and introduced me to the comic talents of Demetri Martin.  She is also a nifty guitar player.

What a crazy ten days.  I didn’t take many photos, as I didn’t take a camera with me (or barely any clothes for that matter) so had the trusty ol’ iPhone out again.  I had to buy a second charger for it as I left mine in Melbourne, but oh my god I would have gone insane alone in that hotel room without text messaging or internet.

Leith Walton’s ‘The Marvellous Misty Mystics’, at Synergy

•March 31, 2011 • 4 Comments

I’d seen a lot of Leith Walton’s work and even seen him paint live at Bimbo Deluxe before I ever actually met the man.

That meeting only came last night when I attended his latest exhibition, ‘The Marvellous Misty Mystics’, which was held at Synergy on High Street in Northcote.

If you’ve ever been to Bar Etiquette on Sydney Road (and if you haven’t, you are missing the fuck out) you will most likely have glimpsed some of Leith’s art. In addition to his pieces hanging on the walls around the venue, he also painted some feature pieces such as the Chocolate Teapot Monster (a most lovable character), and everytime I go back there it seems there’s been something new added.

Leith’s pieces conjure up a dreamy atmosphere, quite otherworldly at times, and I find they tend to take me back to childhood a bit, or at least bring out the child within me. They tend to have a fairly playful vibe about them. But don’t just take my word for it – check out some of his work on his website.

‘The Marvellous Misty Mystics’ is a series of finely inked and watercoloured pieces, all based around the theme of tea drinking and the worlds you get lost in when you drink tea. Or at least, the worlds Leith gets lost in when Leith drinks tea.  One of his pieces was of Damo – an apt subject, Damo being quite the tea-drinking, musical daydreamer himself.

Used with “assumed permission” from Damo. Ie. I assume he would give me permission if I actually asked.

Also during the evening I met Yvette, writer of the Vetti: Live in Northcote blog, of which I am a reader. Always good to put a face to the name of a blog I read!

Leith’s exhibition runs until April 10, so get down Synergy sometime during the next fortnight to check it out. One of the larger pieces had already been reserved for Mikey, one of the owners of Bar Etiquette, so hopefully it will be going up in the bar somewhere after the exhibition finishes.

Chocolate Teapot Monster, happy guardian of Bar Etiquette
