The waves are a nightmare.

Constantly pushing me out, then sucking me back in.

It’s terrifying, and in the end I am always in the same place.

Either wash me out to sea or bring me back to land.

Revisited an old fave last night with some cool chicks and a few cold beverages.

Stay golden Collingwood.

For the love of

•October 27, 2012 • Leave a Comment

It’s 6:06am and I am still awake.  Still on the couch, where I have spent the majority of the past day.  Do I now spend most of the morning trying to sleep, or do I battle on and stay awake so that I can go to bed at a decent hour later tonight?  Whichever; they’re both shit options.

Screw you, daylight!  You always come at the most inappropriate times.

Back in Melbourne, y’all

I have been a bit lax with the posts lately, and I don’t know whether I’ll post anything from the rest of my Europe trip, but I haven’t gone through all the photos yet so maybe I will if they inspire me to.

For now, have some Melbourne lights from last night.

Sporadic update

•September 18, 2012 • 2 Comments

Apologies for the lack of posts.  I am travelling though the Balkans and Romania at the moment, and am changing location every few days, and also having a lot of fun; so there hasn’t really been much time for me to write or go through photos.  I’ll be on the English coast in a few days time so I should be able to update properly then.

I have been through Croatia, Bosnia-Hercegovina, Serbia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Bulgaria and am currently in Romania.

Favourite places so far: Berlin and Split

Least favourite place: Dubrovnik

My favourite memories tend to be my favourites because of the people I have been hanging out with rather than just the places themselves, so I’ll give honourable mentions to Skopje, Prishtina and Belgrade for this reason as well.

Snapshots from Samos

•August 4, 2012 • 4 Comments

I met up with my mum and cousin in Samos a couple of weeks ago.  It was my mum’s first ever trip to Europe so that was pretty exciting for her.

We stayed at my cousin’s son’s fiancee’s (got that?) little house in the little town of Psili Amos – on one of only two sandy beaches on the entire island.  Most are stony beaches and I don’t imagine they’d be nearly as fun…

Most of my time consisted of going back-and-forth between sun baking in coconut oil on my banana lounge and swimming in the crystal clear water of the Mediterranean, though I did also get to see the statue of Pythagoras in Pythagoreio (a highlight for my geeky maths-loving self) and the archeological museum in Samos town – full of things made around 8 B.C.

It was a nice change from the crappy Melbourne-esque weather I’d been subjected to in Berlin up until then (and as soon as I got back, meh).  I did get a good tan too; stoked about that.

And yes – the Greek Islands really are full of kittehs!

Beelitz-Heilstatten Sanatorium

•August 2, 2012 • 1 Comment

I went out to visit the old abandoned sanatorium in Beelitz-Heilstatten last week.

Beelitz, as it is commonly referred to, has been abandoned since 2000.  Originally built as a tuberculosis sanatorium; it became a German military hospital in World War I (Hitler was a patient here in 1916) and in World War II was occupied by the Soviets.  Beelitz remained a soviet military hospital until 1995, and this will explain why there is a lot of Russian graffiti throughout the buildings – in fact, there was virtually no German graffiti.

The hospital complex was originally made up of 60 buildings, and some of these remain in operation today.

The abandoned section of the complex was used as a film set for The Pianist movie, and these days is still a popular destination for explorers or curious locals – we ran into six people whilst we were there.  Due to it’s popularity, the one building that is easily accessible is pretty trashed, and the other buildings are boarded up… but the boarded-up buildings look absolutely beautiful inside through their broken windows.

I loved the architecture of the buildings, particularly the balcony railings, as well as the interior ceilings.  The interior tiling was beautiful, and the buildings that were secured looked as though their interiors were still in pretty good condition.

One of my favourite Melbourne bands, Planet Love Sound, shot the video for their track On the Run here last year.  I know I’ve posted it before, but I’m going to post it again – they are beautiful.

Kreuzberg Wandering

•July 29, 2012 • 1 Comment

Went for a wander around Kreuzberg today.

For those of you from Melbourne, Kreuzberg is kinda like Berlin’s equivalent to Fitzroy/Collingwood.

If you ever happen to be in Kreuzberg, I suggest you try one of the Haloumi Cheese wraps from Falafel & Falafel, 102 Skalitzer Strasse, opposite the Kotbusser Tor station.  A wrap of fried haloumi, couscous, salad and tasty sauce – they are to die for.

Yorkshire Brewery development has been approved by Heritage Victoria

•July 24, 2012 • Leave a Comment

I got this message from Loretta regarding the Yorkshire Brewery development:

“Hi, I’m planning a door knock with J Rayner to get as many objections lodged as possible. It has been approved as I understand it by Heritage Vic, now it is going to town planning. Any help would be great, going to try to get to as many objections as possible and they must be lodged by July 30th. You seem more informed as to the details which I don’t have time for unfortunately. Am trying to see if I can find anyone in the media who it would be of interest to however I’d need assistance. Surely we can gather a movement of people who would be opposed to this..?!

This development has indeed been approved by Heritage Vic.

So if anyone can help, please contact Loretta.  Also if anyone knows any more details about what is happening, I’d like to know too!

Berlin’s abandoned spy towers

•July 18, 2012 • Leave a Comment

After multiple European urbex fails, something actually went right.  Rejoice!

I made the trek out to the abandoned spy towers in western Berlin with a couple of Melbourne chaps who are friends-of-a-friend… by “trek” I mean we caught an air-conditioned cab most of the way there, followed by a 20-minute hike up a path through the forrest.  Hey, we’re on holidays.

The spy towers were used by the Americans during the Cold War to intercept communication by the Soviets over in the eastern part of Berlin.  The site was supposed to be developed into apartments years ago, but that never happened, and now the area is zoned as park or national park or something like that so I don’t think anything will be built there.

It’s quite a popular location to visit – there were about 30 people there when we went, including a small child with his parents.  Most were just sitting around, chilling out and drinking.

The very top dome has some trippy acoustics.  One dude was recording sounds on his laptop.  Any sound, even a whisper, was magnified and reverberated around the dome.  Murdoch went the week before I did and has a video of the sounds in the dome.

You get some great views of the city in the distance from the upper levels, and it was cool to see pieces of graffiti that I’d seen in photos a couple of years ago, in person.

No sign of any security this time, which was a nice change.

You can see more photos on Cy Crowe‘s site as well as a few more of mine.
