A plug for: Shinichi Maruyama

•June 30, 2010 • 1 Comment

Shinichi Maruyama creates beautiful images by using a giant paintbrush to flick water into the air, and capturing it with high-speed photography.

He was born in Nagano, Japan in 1968, and currently resides in New York City.

I love his work – the sense of movement and space, the texture and the monochromatic colour.

Check out his website here.

In case you have been living under a rock: the Tote is reopen!

(Re)opening night was Thursday June 17, I’ve made it down twice since then; don’t ask me who played because I can’t remember.

Caiti and James do it again!

The single launch for sietta‘s cover of Marcy Playground’s  Sex and Candy, their new single, at The Johnston in Fitzroy last Saturday night.

If you didn’t go you missed out on lollies and condoms.  Ner.

You also missed out on an accoustic set by Jess Harlen.

I come armed with a video this time, of their track Glass to Slate.  Picture is somewhat dubious; sound is pretty good.  My little camera done okay.

Disclaimer: camera is hand-held.  Try not to get seasick.

Ex-Fitzroyite

•May 12, 2010 • 5 Comments

I am not in Fitzroy anymore. Well, I am in Fitzroy right at this moment. But I am no longer officially a resident of this wonderful suburb.

I will, however, remain a constant fixture on the Fitzroy pub circuit.

It has been two weeks now since I moved out of Fitzroy.

Big thumbs up to Joel @ Little Red Trucks for helping me move my few belongings over to the other side of the river.

I should perhaps change the name of the blog, though “Melbourne and Beyond” perhaps sounds a little too generic. (And “Port Melbourne and Beyond” doesn’t sound at all like interesting reading.)

Any suggestions for a new blog title?
I shall still be sauntering around in the sun, though it will be cold winter sun, and a lot of the sauntering shall be down by the bay, and it won’t actually be sauntering but rather very brisk walking in a futile attempt to keep warm.

PS. I’m sure that “Fitzroyite” isn’t the best word to use to describe a resident of Fitzroy, and I’m definitely not Fitzroyalty, so any suggestions on this will also be appreciated.

Jess Harlen album launch, supported by Sietta

On Thursday night I made a pilgrimage (in dodgy boots – fine on the walk there, not so fine on the walk back) to Northcote Social Club for the album launch of Jess Harlen.

I discovered Jess a couple of months ago, thanks to my friend James (of Sietta, formerly of Culture Connect) raving about her.  Her sound is a combination of blues and soul, with a dash of funk, and Thursday night saw her accompanied by a full band, including a sax and two guest vocalists.  Jess played acoustic guitar throughout the one-hour set which was to launch her first full length album, Neon Heartache (she released an EP, Street Level Soul, in 2007).  You’ll find it impossible to stand still when you hear her – I did, anyway.  Gotta love a girl who “cheers”es the crown several times throughout her set with her bottle of beer!  She has definitely found a new fan in me.  Standout tracks: I Go, Watch the Water.  Jess is touring Australia through April and May to launch Neon Heartache, then is off to Tokyo.

Jess was supported by Sietta, a two-piece comprising of James Mangohig and Caiti B, who are about to move to Darwin (in James’ case, back to Darwin), and who have been gaining in popularity rapidly – check out their myspace for what they’ve been up to!  A combination of funk, hip-hop and beats, and I have to say, Caiti’s voice is one of the best I have heard in a long time, and – similarly to watching Jess – you won’t want to stand still.  Especially when you see her dance!  James is a gun behind a synthesiser, and they also played a couple of acoustic tracks (I saw their full acoustic set at the Empress a couple of months back, a winner also).  Stand out tracks: Take it or Leave It, Glass to Slate.  Get yo’selves down to the launch of their new single, a cover of Marcy Playground’s Sex and Candy at The Johnston on Saturday May 8.

I would just like to say three things:

•April 18, 2010 • 5 Comments
  1. I need to find somewhere to live pretty soonish, and I would like to remain in Fitzroy/Collingwood or as close to either as possible (I’m actually really liking Clifton Hill at the moment).  Anyone know of anyone who’s looking for a housemate?  I’m looking to pay $180 a week max (ideally).
  2. I went to Tassie last week and I really liked it and I really want to go back in August/September to see Caz in her production of ‘The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas’.
  3. I really like the word “whorehouse”.  It’s a good sounding word.  The words “whore” and “house” go together well, I think.

I shall leave you with a picture of Caz n Jo’s cute little cat, Jedi.  He’s a bit of a terror, actually.  I think he has cat ADHD.

Jedi!

Friday morning

•April 17, 2010 • 5 Comments

I went to a good friend’s going away party Thursday night.  Got home about 6am Friday morning and suddenly wasn’t tired anymore (despite not being able to keep my eyes open sitting at her kitchen table ten minutes earlier).  Went for a bit of an Exploration in Collingwood; to somewhere I have been a number of times.  I watched three hot air balloons make their way over Collingwood and disappear into the distance.  Morning sunshine; lovely.

I also scored a cool Everfresh sticker which I found stuck to in internal silo wall; it is now displayed proudly on my handbag.
