Former Gilbertsons/SBA Foods meatworks

Looking back through old photos, I realised I’ve never posted my photos from the former meatworks in Altona.

Originally Gilbertson’s Meat Processing, the plant was later renamed SBA Foods.  SBA Foods closed down in 1999 and moved their operations to Tasmania.

Not much remained of the abatoir itself when we went, and the main building had been partially gutted by fire.  In one room makeshift skate ramps had been built.  Where better a place to skate than an abandoned meat processing plant?

The site has since been demolished.  My photos are from 2011.
