Luana Coonen Jewelry

•December 2, 2013 • Leave a Comment

I met Luana Coonen in Braşov, a small town in Transylvania, Romania.  She was travelling with her friend Kit, and I hung out with these two childhood friends from Hawaii on our travels around Romania.  We had a pretty rad time, even when we missed the train to Cluj-Napoca because we went to an abandoned train station instead of the operational one in the middle of town (heh).  I lost all of my photos from Romania, unfortunately.

Lu is an experienced silvermsmith and jewellery maker, and takes inspiration for her designs from nature.  She collects lichen, butterfly wings, shedded snake skin and other materials on her wanders, enclosing them in clear polycarbonate to make striking and unique pieces.  All her jewellery is made by hand, and the delicate designs cut into silver are all hand-sawed.

The wasps enclosed in a clear bangle is one of my favourite pieces of hers, as are her newly-finished sterling silver hand-sawed heart hoops.

You can see more of her beautiful creations at Luana Coonen Jewelry and also check out her Etsy store (where all pictured jewellery can be purchased at the time I am posting this).  She currently has a 20% off sale until the end of Monday Dec 2nd (American time)!

Sietta have big things coming up

•November 30, 2013 • Leave a Comment

Sietta wowed the crowds at Elefant Traks’ 15th Anniversary shows in Melbourne last weekend, and are halfway through doing the same in Sydney this weekend.  The shows feature Elefant Traks‘ entire catalogue of artists over two nights.

Caiti B at Northcote Social Club

They were still in the Bounce County studio the night before jetting out to Sydney; James working on various musical adjustments with Pip aka Count Bounce, whilst Caiti, being the graphic design gun that she is, mocked up a potential cover for the new album.

Due to fly out to Sydney around 8am, they had to pull an all-nighter to finish work on the album, which is due out in February.

Caiti is not just an awesome singer and dancer, she can also make stuff on computers - triple threat!

And it was all yellow

Sietta will be playing at the NYE on the Hill festival for new years eve (as well as James’ other musical collaboration with Yeroc from TZU, Damn Moroda)… should be pretty sweet!

My favourite cemetery in Berlin

•November 19, 2013 • Leave a Comment

I was living in Mitte last year, one of the central areas of Berlin. I found this little cemetery that was very overgrown. Once you were inside the gates, you wouldn’t hear any outside noises from cars or people. It was an awesome place to sit and read a book amongst the trees and graves (I saw one businessman doing just that one day).

It didn’t feel like it was in the middle of a city at all…

An afternoon with Shallinda

•November 5, 2013 • Leave a Comment

Tan and I spent Friday afternoon with the lovely Shallinda – well actually we started bright and early at 10:30am (keep in mind I’m a hospitality worker right now, so 10:30am is plenty early for me).  Shallinda is elfin and soft-spoken but with a tendency to pipe up at random times.  She also has dazzling blue eyes, and is game enough to try any ideas Tan and I threw at her – though sensible enough not to replicate Tan’s (aka Monkey Boy’s) feats at climbing up dodgy abandoned warehouse scaffolding.

Punk Palace birthday mural

•October 21, 2013 • Leave a Comment

Yesterday my friend Damian painted a wall at our friend Leon’s place for Leon’s birthday.  Leon lives with our other friend Bartek in an awesome abode above a shop in Collingwood named Punk Palace.  The wall painting was supposed to be a surprise.  I inadvertently ruined it when Damo and I organised to have Bloody Mary’s whilst he was painting.  He neglected to tell me it was a surprise though (he blames bourbon for this).

So on my way over I messaged Leon to say I’d be there soon and did he have any ice?  He replied, “On your way where?  My joint?”  I said “Yes, Damo said he’s painting”.  Leon said, “you may have just ruined a surprise…”

Awkward.

Leon came home halfway through the painting anyway, and he loved it.  And then we went out for beers which led to a very tiring night for me by the time I got home.  But oh well, your friends only turn 37 once!

Behind the scenes of Sietta’s new music video ‘Let It Go’

•September 9, 2013 • 1 Comment

Back in July I documented the filming of the music video for Sietta’s new single Let It Go. Featuring a custom-made laser-cut metal set, the video primarily features Caiti decked out in layers of gold bling, chained to the set from which she is trying to escape.

Directed by Andy Lane and shot by Lee Jake Mariano, set design by Catherine Sewell, styled by Grace Dlabik with makeup by Emily Onikul.
